V-Ray Interactive Production Rendering (IPR) provides interactive rendering using the V-Ray Adv renderer.

While both IPR and V-Ray RT render interactively, they differ in a few key areas.

  • V-Ray RT is a renderer on its own, while V-Ray IPR is a tool that works in conjunction with the full-featured V-Ray Adv renderer.
  • V-Ray RT works by exporting the scene or translating it to prepare it for the renderer. Conversely, the V-Ray IPR can directly render the scene, which makes it a faster option.


Settings for the behavior of the VFB when using IPR rendering can be found on the IPR options rollout under the Settings tab in the Render Setup window.


Using V-Ray IPR

The IPR option is currently accessible only from the V-Ray Frame Buffer (VFB).

To use V-Ray IPR:

  1. In the Render Setup window, make sure the Production render engine is set to V-Ray Adv. To open the VFB, click the Last VFB button on the V-Ray Toolbar, or click Show Last VFB under the V-Ray tab > Frame buffer rollout.

  2.  To start IPR, click the Start interactive rendering button on the VFB toolbar. You can now make changes to the scene while the rendering continues, and the changes will be rendered automatically.

  3. When the scene is rendering, the Start interactive rendering button changes to the Refresh interactive rendering button. Click this button to restart the rendering at any time. The progress bar at the bottom of V-Ray Frame Buffer tracks the rendering progress of the current scene.


  4. Use the Stop rendering button to stop V-Ray IPR. After stopping, you can click Start interactive rendering again to restart IPR.

Additional Features

While IPR is running, if the Fit resolution to VFB option is enabled in the IPR options rollout, the render will refresh to fill the VFB if the VFB window is resized. The render output size will also change accordingly.

In addition, the IPR rendering will refresh whenever the Region Render area is redrawn.

  • When V-Ray RT is set as the Production renderer, ActiveShade rendering will be used instead of V-Ray IPR.
  • V-Ray IPR will render V-Ray Render Elements, although it will not track changes to the render elements and the render will need to be refreshed.
  • V-Ray IPR is still under development, so specific features like Atmospheric effects may not be available at this time. Support for additional features is being added in subsequent builds.
  • V-Ray IPR doesn't support 3ds max default lights.
