# V-Ray Fur

## Overview

Goal - Develop the look for the grass around the stump. Use various fur parameters to create different looks

Objective – We will use several parameters to set up and alter fur in a scene

Outcome – You will understand how to work with the fur parameters to create variations in grass

## Lecture

### 1. Terminology

Here’s some terms to be aware of when thinking about fur:

• Knots
• Segments for deforming geometry
• Variance
• Provides random variations of parameters

### 2. V-Ray Fur

a) Fur Overview

• Add fur node to an object via V-Ray Fur button in V-Ray Shelf, or in the Maya menu choose Create > V-Ray > V-Ray Fur
• Adjust attributes for fur node
• Use maps to adjust attributes
• Assign VRay Hair Mtl to the fur object

b) Parameters that affect fur
• Length, Thickness
• Gravity, Bend, Knots
• Taper
• Length variance
• Distribution

c) V-Ray Fur button
• Creates a fur node for selected object
• Parameters for fur are set within the node

d) Rendering of fur
• Make sure that the Hair/PaintFX/Fur checkbox is enabled in Render Settings>Overrides>Geometry

e) Length
• Sets length of fur strands

f) Thickness

• Affects width of fur strands

g) Bend
• Elasticity of strands

h) Gravity
• Degree of bend toward the –Z axis

i) Knots
• Number of segments along each strand
• Higher values make smoother bends

j) Taper
• Tapers all strands
• Increasing Taper makes strands wider at base, thinner at tip

k) Length variance
• Randomizes lengths

l) Distribution
• Determines how strands are scattered across the surface
• Per area or Per face

m) Textures
• Many fur parameters can be set by textures
• Here we are seeing a Normals map affecting the direction of the grass blades through the Bend Direction texture parameter.

n) VRay Fur Sampler node
• Here, it is used to place a ramp texture color along the length of the fur strand

o) VrayHairMtl
• Material especially for hair and fur
• Reflection and translucency mimic real-life hair and fur

p) VrayHairMtl parameters

• Primary specular - light reflected off the outer surface of a strand
• Primary amount – multiplier for specular color
• Transmission – overall hair color
